The 1983 Reading Festival marked the end of the long running 3 day festival which started life in 1970. The Stranglers headlined the Friday night on a day that saw a varity of different musical genres. Pallas, Solstice and Pendragon represented the new prog wave of bands (Marillion played the Saturday and Twelfth Night the Sunday), Hanoi Rocks bought their glam/punk New York Dolls sound, Man were there on the least likely of days to find their fan base and Big Country were special guests. Steel Pulse tried (twice) to get the audience to listen rather than chuck bottles before deciding that the Reading Festival wasn't really the place for a reggae band, shame really as I like Steel Pulse!
This is a great quality radio broadcast complete with Hugh musing on who had the "sick sense of humour" to book the band for a predominately "Heavy Metal" festival as well as dedicating a song for all those who like "heavy music" and then launching into "Golden Brown"!
